Buying a new carpet is a relatively big investment. As with other big decisions, you’ll need to spend time searching, comparing and talking to carpet specialists to ensure the carpet you choose is perfect for you. There is so much more to carpet shopping than aesthetics. To help you make your decision, we’ve put together our top five things to consider when buying a new carpet.

Maintenance

If you have young children, pets or are simply clumsy, you’re going to want to consider a stain resistant carpet. Different styles of carpets have different maintenance requirements. Deep carpets are difficult to clean and lighter coloured rugs will quickly show dirt and easily pick up stains. If you want a carpet that requires minimal maintenance levels, opt for a dark coloured, smooth carpet.

Underlay is Important

Even though the underlay isn’t seen, it’s not a good idea to cut costs. Good carpets need a solid foundation to be placed on top of. The underlay you buy will be placed under your carpet and will act as an added defence against wear and tear. If you opt for cheaper underlay, you’ll notice your carpet wears much faster. Underlay also adds to the comfort of your carpet, creating a soft and squishy feeling beneath you!

What Colour?

It’s inevitable that one of the most important factors when deciding on new flooring is the colouring. You’ll want to ensure the carpet you choose matches the decoration in your home; the walls, the curtains and the furniture. Ask for carpet samples to take home, or a colour chart sample if you have more than one idea in mind. Carpet colours vary depending on the lighting, so use your samples to determine how the carpet will look during all hours of the day.

Price Per Square Metre

Work out the approximate cost of your carpet before you buy to ensure you know exactly what you’re paying for! Measure the width of your floor as well as the length, and multiply the two together to give you an idea of the total square metres required. Most carpet prices are per square metre, so you’ll be able to work out the approximate cost by multiplying the total square metres by the cost of your carpet (per square metre).

Warranty

Most carpets will come with warranty guidelines to ensure you get the most life out of your carpet as possible. Make sure you know what the guidelines are so if your carpet fails, you will be eligible for a replacement or refund. It’s also important to follow all recommended guidelines for cleaning and maintenance. This will keep your carpet looking perfect for years to come and will help you avoid voiding your warranty.
